Cost: Concrete Wins

For most residential driveways, concrete is 40–60% less expensive than pavers. A 700 sq ft plain concrete driveway might run $5,000–$8,400. The same area in brick pavers: $12,600–$21,000+. Even stamped concrete, at $9,800–$15,400 for that same area, is often below midrange paver pricing.

Repairability: Pavers Win

When an individual paver cracks or shifts, you lift it out and replace it. When concrete cracks, repair patches are almost always visible — especially in colored or stamped work. For homeowners who prioritize long-term repairability over upfront cost, pavers have a real advantage.

The Sandhills Soil Context

Sandy Sandhills soil (Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Seven Lakes) drains fast, which is good, but also provides a less stable base. Pavers on sandy soil can shift over time as the base settles. Concrete is one solid slab and won't shift — but will crack if the base moves significantly. In either case, proper sub-base preparation is the real variable. A well-prepared base matters more than material choice.

HOA Rules

In communities like Pinehurst where the HOA specifies materials or visual character, the HOA rules may answer this question for you. Some Pinehurst communities prefer the traditional look of pavers; others have approved stamped concrete. We know what the major HOAs in our service area typically approve.

Our Recommendation

Budget-focused and want a durable, low-maintenance surface: concrete, plain or exposed aggregate. Want decorative options and have the budget: concrete (stamped) or pavers — both work, pavers cost more, repair better. HOA specifies one or the other: that answers it. Long-term repairability is the top priority: pavers. We pour concrete and will refer you to a reputable paver installer if pavers are the better fit for your specific situation.
