Retaining Wall Contractors

Grade control that holds.

A retaining wall that fails is more than an eyesore — it's an erosion problem, a drainage problem, and potentially a neighbor problem. We build both concrete block and natural stone walls, and we include proper drainage from the start because a wall without drainage is a wall on a timer.

Retaining Walls

Concrete Block vs Natural Stone

Segmental block (like Allan Block or Versa-Lok) is faster to install, structurally predictable, and easier to get permits for. Natural stone looks more custom and tends to blend better in the Pinehurst/Southern Pines aesthetic — traditional neighborhoods where uniform block can look out of place. Both are durable. The right choice depends on your site, your HOA, and your preference. We do both.

Drainage — The Detail Most Contractors Skip

A retaining wall holds back soil, and soil holds water. Without a drainage layer (crushed stone + perforated pipe behind the wall), hydrostatic pressure builds and the wall fails — usually by bulging outward in year 3 or 4. We include drainage in every wall quote. We'll show you exactly what we're installing before we start.

Height, Permits & Structural Requirements in NC

In North Carolina, walls under 4 feet generally don't require an engineered design. Over 4 feet, most jurisdictions want a permit and sometimes a stamped drawing. We know the rules in Lee, Moore, Harnett, and Wake counties. If permits are required, they're included in your quote.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How much does a retaining wall cost in NC?

Concrete block walls typically run $35–$65 per linear foot for walls under 4 feet. Natural stone runs $60–$120+ per linear foot depending on stone type and complexity. Drainage work is included in our quotes.

How long do retaining walls last?

Properly built concrete block walls last 25–50 years. The main cause of premature failure is inadequate drainage — which is why we build it in from the start.

Do you handle walls on steep slopes?

Yes. Steep slopes may require terraced walls (multiple shorter walls) instead of one tall wall. We assess at the estimate and recommend the right approach for your grade.
