Two foundation options dominate residential and light commercial outbuilding construction in NC. Here's how they differ and when each applies.
Monolithic Slab
Poured in one continuous operation — the thickened edge and slab pour together. Faster, often more affordable, and suitable for most outbuildings and ADUs. NC building code allows monolithic slabs for most structures under 2 stories on appropriate soil conditions.
Traditional Stem Wall Foundation
Footer poured and cured first, then stem wall built up to slab height, then slab poured separately. Required for taller structures, structures on difficult soil, or where code requires a certain crawl-space height. More expensive and slower, but necessary for some applications.
Which One You Need
For most garages, workshops, carports, and storage buildings on appropriate soil in our service area: monolithic slab. For house additions that need to match an existing foundation height or multi-story structures: we assess and recommend at the estimate.
